Friction patterns we keep seeing in Thai fintech onboarding
Bangkok product teams often inherit a funnel that was designed against a Singapore or US template and then translated. The translation is not only linguistic. Identity checks, bank hours, and device mix all shift the drop-off story. Onboarding Drop-Off Analytics that ignore those shifts will recommend the wrong experiment.
KYC as a loop, not a step
Dashboards love a single “KYC complete” box. Users experience a loop: photo, glare, retry, wait, SMS, retry. If your event stream only records the final green tick, you will diagnose boredom where the real leak is retry fatigue. We ask atelier teams to count distinct attempt sessions before they count completions.
Language switching as an exit ramp
Dual-language interfaces are ordinary in Thailand. What is less ordinary is a Continue button that silently resets locale and dumps a half-finished form. We have watched interview participants describe that moment as “the app changed its mind.” They rarely file a ticket. They simply leave. Treat locale persistence as instrumentation, not a nice-to-have.
The polite Continue
Several consumer-finance teams we sat with labelled a secondary action Continue when it actually skipped a value step — card binding, beneficiary add, or permission grant. Completion rates looked generous. First funded or first transfer lagged. Renaming the button did less than splitting the event. Theatre first, copy later.
Upcountry device reality
A permission prompt that is trivial on a current flagship phone can be a wall on older Android builds still common outside central Bangkok. If your cohort is national and your analytics sample is office devices, the drop curve is a tourist map. Weight the curve by the device mix you actually serve, or admit that you are analysing a boutique slice.
None of this is uniquely Thai forever — but it is the pattern that keeps arriving at the Charoennakorn studio. If your product is not fintech, borrow the method anyway: name the loop, persist the locale, stop calling a skip a continue.
